Bij de Esker Film Society leren we samen anders kijken. Elke editie vertonen we korte, grensverleggende films vol experiment en onderzoek. Films die uitnodigen om te denken en te interpreteren: wat heb ik gezien, wat voelde ik, waar moest ik aan denken?

Filmmaker en programmeur Bram Ruiter begeleidt het publiek in dit proces van aandachtig en open kijken. Ruiter is een internationaal bekende filmmaker uit Zwolle. Hij geeft les aan Emerson College en werkt als projectondersteuner voor OostPact.

De voertaal van de avonden is Engels, zodat een breed en internationaal publiek kan deelnemen. Esker werkt samen met filmdistributeurs en archieven uit heel Europa.

Europe Direct Zwolle ondersteunt de Esker Film Society omdat wij geloven in het belang van vrije kunst en dialoog. De korte films laten zich niet ‘consumeren’ als gewone cinema: ze vragen om actief kijken, het tijdelijk uitstellen van oordeel en het loslaten van vaste interpretaties. In de gesprekken tussen de films door ontstaat ruimte om perspectieven uit te wisselen. Door deze avonden te ondersteunen, versterken we de verbeeldingskracht en open dialoog die essentieel zijn voor een vitale Europese democratie.

At the Esker Film Society, we learn to look differently—together. Each edition features short, boundary-pushing films filled with experimentation and inquiry. Films that invite reflection and interpretation: what did I see, what did I feel, and what did it make me think about?

Filmmaker and programmer Bram Ruiter guides the audience through this process of attentive and open viewing. Ruiter is an internationally recognized filmmaker from Zwolle. He teaches at Emerson College and works as a project facilitator for OostPact.

The evenings are conducted in English, allowing a broad and international audience to participate. Esker collaborates with film distributors and archives throughout Europe.

Europe Direct Zwolle supports the Esker Film Society because we believe in the importance of free art, critical reflection, and dialogue. These short films cannot be “consumed” like conventional cinema. They require active viewing, the temporary suspension of judgment, and a willingness to let go of fixed interpretations.

The conversations between the films create space for exchanging perspectives. By supporting these evenings, we strengthen the imagination and open dialogue that are essential to a vibrant European democracy.
